An excursion to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves begins with a cruise across spectacular Lake Te Anau on a purpose-built scenic cruise vessel. After disembarking on the western shores, there is time to view the informative displays at Cavern House before your friendly nature guide accompanies you into the caves in a small group (maximum 14 per group). About the Glow Worm CaveIn Maori legend, Lake TeAnau was created by the deception of an unfaithful wife. TeHoro, a Maori chief, discovered a sacred spring in the area. Recognising its significance he told his wife of his discovery but swore her to secrecy. However, when Te Horo departed on a journey, his wife took her lover to the spring. The instant his face was refleded in its waters, a torrent burst forth, drowning the village and forming Lake TeAnau. Until recently, the TeAnau Glowworm Caveswere lost in legend. Their presencewas hinted at only by the ancient Maori name for the area - 'Te Ana-au' - which means 'caves with a current of swirling water.' |
